When you see the amazing color patterns on koi fish, it’s easy to see why the Japanese are so proud of their creative ability to choose and breed Koi fish to produce the mesmerizing Koi combinations. That is one of the major reasons koi fish are still so popular and much loved by their owners and caretakers.

When looking for a koi fish, make sure their colors are bright — red Koi must be vivid red and black Koi must be colored a dark, jet black. Dull black koi or koi with scales, spots or grey markings are not well-kept fish, just like white koi that are not snowy white but yellowing or spattered with specks of grey.

Vivid colors indicate healthy koi and when they are unwell or living in poor water conditions, koi change color and become dull. When buying koi, it is essential to understand how color reflects the health of a koi and this will help you buy a well-kept fish. Koi fish needs special attention and care.

Keep an eye on the color changes; this will help you ensure that you are giving your koi adequate care. (more…)

It is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and this is especially true of Butterfly Koi. Many regard the Butterfly Koi one of the most beautiful fish in the world.

They are very popular in America and it is sometimes referred to as the American Koi. It is a hybrid and not regarded as a true Koi by the purists.

The Butterfly Koi have fins that are long, flowing and almost featherlike in appearance. They are reputed to be a hardy breed and better able to handle colder temperatures. However the breed finds very little acceptance outside of  America and traditional breeders of Koi will not breed them.

Unacceptable Compromise

In the breeding program that led to emergence of Butterfly Koi the aim was to breed an increase in the hardiness of the fish. It is thought that Koi were interbred with wild Indonesian Longfin river carp. The offspring were hardier but had long fins. (more…)

Choosing the Right Magnoi Koi Carp

Without seeing a picture of the koi it is very difficult to correctly name it. I also have a 2 solid yellow koi, one is what they call a ginrin yama butterfly. The koi are a mix of jap and magnoi with sturgeon. The closer the koi is to the natural carp, the hardier it is. Any koi that does fit a type of koi falls into the Kawarimono class which is all other koi.

My husband and I planned on purchasing 3 koi this spring. I picked it out by accident as just an interesting dusty looking little koi then winter came and he turned mostly white.

What is nice about the white koi is they do stand out in the pond. So it will not be a problem and not all Platinum Ogons are a problem it is just that they are the only type of koi that have demonstrated this type of behavior. I guess when you see a lot of pattern koi, it is nice for a change to have a few solid ones in the bunch. (more…)

Your Questions About Koi Fish

George asks…

Koi Fish ?

does anyone know anything about the breeding of a koi and what time a year this happens? do they lay eggs? do they eat their own?

KoiWaterPeace answers:

We have lots of koi in our pool, which is now pond, you will not know but they will lay alot of eggs, but they will eat it, mine layed eggs and only 2 fingerlings survived. If you keep a koi n a small tank, they wouldnt grow, they will grow very slowly. So try placing them in a pond.
If you have a 10 gallon tank, place 2 kois.
But it is better t place them in a pond with guppies, you wouldnt know, but after a year, youll have thousands of guppies swimming in your pond which is a great company for koi’s, guppies entertain kois and sometimes eat em’ but mine doesnt.we wouldnt know what time of the year it happens but in a glimpse, you wouldnt know if there are eggs, they lay eggs in a standing position, like (example) she’ll lay the eggs on the aquarium wall. When other fish see this, they will eat it.baby koi’s swim in groups, so if you have a baby koi, try buying some wth the same size, but dont put too many in the tank for they will fight for space.Koi’s are gentle fish and they will get along with either carps, gold fish and even an arowana!koi’s are great community fish but grow faster in large ponds.

Steven asks…

My koi fish is beginning to get too big for my tank. Where can I donate my koi to?

It’s body is about 4 inches long, and the fins are about two, which is starting to be too big for my tank. I have other fish as well, but the koi takes up a lot of swimming space. Is there any place I can give, or sell my koi fish to?

KoiWaterPeace answers:

Foreget craigs list. Putting up with the hastle of “shipping” just one fish isn’t worth the bother.

Lawn and garden centers/green houses that deal in koi will take him. Any store that sells or deals with koi will more than likely give you a credit (not much) towards other items in the store. Free ads in the local I wanta’s also work for “Free koi” for someone just looking to stock their own ponds. Usually they are easy fish to “give” away.

Sharon asks…

what does it mean when you koi fish shakes its head vigorously and gasps at the top of the pond?

I have recently changed locations of my pond in my backyard. However which was a month ago. but this one koi fish isolates itself from the other koi fishes. my koi fish goes to the top of the pond shakes his head while my other koi fish lay at the bottom of the pond and swim together!! whats wrong with my one koi fish?
