Most people think the holy grail of koi keeping (besides show-quality, healthy fish) is having an elegant outdoor water garden. But having an indoor koi pond or an indoor-outdoor pond is the ultimate koi delight. There can, however, be problems.

Koi take up a lot of space, so an indoor koi pond can be very expensive. More than that, though, koi are jumpers and splashers. So adding to the expense of construction and the loss of indoor floor space, there is the problem of keeping koi from either committing koi suicide by jumping out—or just splashing out a lot of water and ruining your floors.

One solution to preventing indoor water damage is to put a plexiglass railing (a low, clear wall) around your indoor pond, so you can see the fish but they can’t jump out or throw water on the floor. But some people prefer to get closer to their fish. Or just do not realize how messy koi can be.

I kept two young koi in a 75-gallon pond in my bedroom until they were 14 inches long while hoping to move to a house. That was not a good idea, of course, but the pond on my apartment patio had been taken over by a young raccoon.

Naturally keeping the water fresh in such a small pond was a constant battle. I knew it would be.

What I did not expect was that the koi would throw so much water whenever they wanted their morning feeding. No sleeping late on weekends for me! They could splash (really throw) water far enough to splash my feet while I was in bed. And they did, often. They had very good aim.

Of course there were spills while treating and changing the water, but I was lucky. With indoor ponds you can have pond leaks, pipe leaks, pump failures and so many other little accidents that can cause indoor floods that ruin floors, upholstery and carpets. Then what do you do?

Not to worry. There are services that deal with those things. And they are definitely the best way to go.

For example in central Texas you can get help repairing water damaged floors austin with just a phone call. They can clean water-damaged carpet and upholstery for you, too.

So I say let the experts handle it. Because taking care of koi is enough of a job all by itself.

Ponds built for koi should be close to three feet or deeper to allow these larger fish enough space. In Japan, breeding koi has occupied a position between hobby and art form for more than two centuries A koi pond is different from a water garden because koi limit the amount of plant life available to be grown.

Koi do not hibernate and even though they can live through the cold months in the Pacific Northwest, I try to make their winter more comfortable. Koi is a drum shaped Japanese fish which can make your garden pond come alive with its vibrant colors and playful behavior.

If you are keeping koi then a smaller upper pool or plant protectors will be needed to keep them from eating the Anacharis. The rock and gravel Koi pond technology has been revolutionized with the Back Flushable Waterfall Filtration systems.

Most modern Koi are considered special if they reach 1 meter in length, and average age from 40 to 60years. Hybrid Koi Pond Kits that will reshape the pond and waterfall construction industry.

Although a natural pond does not require the use of a pond filter a man made pond can only benefit from its use. Pond filters are designed to break down toxins within the water usually caused by decaying organic particles, if a pond filter is not used to remove this physical dirt your pond could be at risk of having poor pond water which could result in health problems for any fish living within the pond.

Depending on the size of your pond and how many fish you have will determine the type and size of the pond filter you need. Once installed the pond filter will keep both the water free from particles that can cause the water to be murky, smelly and even toxic, your fish and pond plants will also benefit from the pond filter as they will be healthier.

Pond filters not only optimise the viewing of your pond by cleaning the water for enhanced viewing of the fish, plants and inhabitants pond filters also conserve water by cleaning and recycling the ponds original water, When the water is pumped back into your pond it keeps the pond water which also helps to reduce the risk of the pond becoming stagnant.

There are several different types of pond filters to choose from all of which will produce a noticeable difference to any garden pond.

External Filters

External pond filters are usually the largest type of pond filter available. They are situated outside of the pond but close to it. They are usually filled with large sheets of foam with porous or plastic stone biological media underneath.
The biggest advantage of external pond filters is the improvement of the water quality it is also possible to add different filer media to serve other purposes should you have a specific problem with your pond. Having the pond filter outside of the pond makes the unit a lot easier to clean also the external pond filter supports the largest fish load.

The only disadvantage is the size and visibility however it is quite easy to disguise the pond filter behind pond plants making it less visible.

Submersed Filters

These pond filters are extremely versatile and are filled with a mixture of filter media for different types of filtration including chemical, mechanical and biological filtration. The advantages of this type of pond filter is not only the cleanliness of the water but the pond filter can also be used for other purposes such as water fountains, pond spitters and many other water based pond feature.

The only disadvantage is this type of pond filter is submersed in the water which may mean that you will need to stand in the pond to retrieve it depending on where it is situated when you decide to clean it.

When purchasing pond filters you will find that pet shops are always happy to help you chooses the right filter to suit your pond, take the time to ask someone in the shop and explain what sort of pond you have it is also wise to have a rough idea of the size and how many fish reside with it to make sure the best pond filter is selected.

[...]

The main difference between a small pond and a large pond besides their sizes is the type of pond maintenance they require. For a small to medium-sized pond, normal caring is enough. A few water changes here there and that’s it. However for a larger pond, extra attention is definitely needed in order to keep the water system alive.

They require garden pond supplies. Typically speaking, a usual-size pond requires a functioning biological pond filter in order to keep control of the dirt accumulation in the water system. Conversely speaking, a common biological pond filter will not work in a large pond due to the amount of water in the pond.

It is unavoidable to come up with an alternative filtration system for the large pond since a normal bio filter will not work. If you are planning in improvising it by compacting gravel in order to meet the need for a filtration system in the large pond, you shouldn’t push through. This is because of the decaying tendencies of solid wastes that can be trapped within the gravels.

In order to have well-maintained large pond, the primary thing that needs to be done is to control the nutrient accumulation and consumption in the pond. If there are many pond plants surrounding the water system then the more nutrients are consumed by these living things. Meaning to say, there are less nutrients for the fish in the pond.

More importantly, a number of pond aerators will be of great help in the proper circulation of oxygen in the entire pond. Without aerators, the pond will be lifeless since oxygen is the main source of life in it. The presence right amount of oxygen in the pond will enable nature to take its course as it contributes to the maintenance of the large pond. If a small to medium pond can make a submersible pond pump and aerator work, do not think that it will be the same in a larger pond because the water volume involved is much higher thus requires stronger power.

The season that necessitates the presence of an external pond aerator is the summer. The heat that the season brings can cause the pond to be warm enough to house viruses and bad bacteria which all will cause illnesses to the fish. Without proper oxygen circulation in the pond, every living thing in it will surely die.

Once everything is settled in the large pond, pond pump and pond aerators properly installed, then you may now proceed to the various pond treatments you can use. It is a prerequisite in every pond, especially in a large pond to be treated with the right things. Appropriate pond treatments like pond sludge removers, pond dye, pond conditioners are needed in order to maintain a healthy pond. But if you are thinking of using strong chemicals to meet this requirement, you may want to know that chemicals are always chosen the last. If you think the situation of your large pond cannot be dealt with using non-chemical treatments any longer, this is the only time when you can resort to the use of chemicals.

[...]

Before approaching the task of constructing a Koi Pond, ask yourself the following questions:

Are you prepared to build the Koi Pond yourself or get an expert to build it for you?

There is no substitute for getting quality advice from a professional pond builder. After you have done your preliminary research and have started to gain some idea of what you want, you can really benefit from consulting with a professional. They can discuss your ideas with you and help spell out what is doable and what is not; what is realistic and what is not; and finally, what is affordable and what is not! Following such a discussion, you will be in a far better position to decide whether you want to build yourself or hire a professional builder do the work for you.

Just how much can you afford to spend?

This is the easiest but most critical question of all. Take a guess at what it “might” cost to build the Koi Pond you have in mind and then double it! Is this amount out of your reach? Well, guess what! This is exactly the “scary” question you ought to ask yourself!

Now, get yourself an expenses book and list out all predicted itemized expenses as you do your research. You will need to determine a budget for absolutely EVERYTHING before you even think about grabbing that spade! As you finalize your preliminary budget, ask yourself once more if this is affordable or way beyond your means.

If it is within range of what you expected, then you can look for ways to reduce spending if needed, along the way. For example, when it comes to stocking your completed pond, you may want to cut back by purchasing smaller or less mature Koi specimens as these are often less expensive. Likewise, you may be able to cut back on pond plant expenditure or ornamentation if necessary.

How much room do you have for a Koi Pond?

Now this is almost as important as the “Money” question! You really need to consider not only the size of the pond that you “want” but what your backyard can “accommodate”. Think in terms of what percentage of the yard would be needed for your ultimate pond – this can help put things in perspective. If your yard is big, then this normally won’t be an issue, but, you do still need to think about the “location” within your yard.

When considering how much space, think along the lines of “bigger is better” – meaning Koi can grow quite big and realistically require a lot of room to grow. You may also be tempted to buy “one of every color” when it comes to stocking your pond, so there is a risk of over-crowding! Set yourself a limit on the quantity of Koi you will have long-term (either by purchasing more Koi later on or from breeding) and ensure that your pond size will be sufficient to accommodate them.

How many Koi fish do you want to have? It’s fairly well known that fish will only grow to a size that their environment can sustain. They will also grow faster where there is a smaller population of fish as a result of less competition for food and better water quality resulting from less waste.

It is less well known however, that the growth of Koi can be promoted better by an increase in water surface area. In other words, if you think about 2 ponds of equivalent volume, let’s say 10,000 gallons (just about 38,000 litres) but different depths, the deeper pond will not promote growth as well as the other as a consequence of a smaller water surface area.

Consider also, that a pond can support a corresponding total weight or “biomass” of fish. For example, in a small pond, the biomass may support either 2 large fish or 20 smaller fish provided that the total weight is the same in either situation, and provided that it does not exceed the final biomass for that pond.

A general guideline when determining how many fish your pond will take is, about 50 to 100 gallons per small koi (under 12″), and 500 to 1000 gallons per large koi (over 24″) in a properly filtered pond. Some experts say that those new to the Koi hobby are advised to build a pond between 1,000 and 5,000 gallons, however, others advise that the ideal pond is more around the 10,000 gallon mark. Ultimately, your pond size will be influenced by cost, location and space, but aim for the biggest you can manage – it’s very difficult to go back and make your pond larger afterward!

How much time are you happy to spend maintaining your Koi Pond?

This question needs to be answered with the same level of honesty and practicality that the question of “Money” was! Think about how much time you “think” you may have to spend upkeeping your Koi Pond and then double it! Is this more time than you’re happy to put in or not? This is another area that should be discussed with your professional koi pond consultant.

Do you have the right location for a Koi Pond?

Just like Real Estate, it’s all about Location! Location! Location! Your Koi Pond needs to be where it can be admired and enjoyed BUT it also wants to be located with the following considerations in mind. To begin with, your pond needs indirect sunlight where possible so that the water temperature doesn’t undergo huge daily variations.

Also try not to place it under a tree where it will collect a lot of leaves and other debris – you don’t want to spend any more time than necessary scooping out leaves. Finally, don’t forget to consider building restrictions from your local council or authority and check for underground pipes and cables before you commence.

Are you prepared to learn about Koi and their needs?

Take the time to do your homework. This will minimize the mistakes that are easily made from guesswork, and could save you a great deal of time, money and effort. There are lots of resources available for you to take advantage of. Try talking to Koi enthusiasts or visit Koi fish club meetings.

Can you dig deep enough for a Koi Pond?

Depth is critical to the success of your Koi Pond. Too deep and it becomes impractical to clean, to catch Koi if necessary, and let’s face it, it becomes too costly to build. Too shallow and your Koi might not have enough shelter from would be predators like cats and birds or shelter from the heat of a summer’s day.

If you are excited about the prospect of hand feeding your new pets, then think about having a shallow area that you can stand in while feeding them. You will still need to have the remainder of the pond at a minimum depth of at least 3 or 4 feet, but ideally, if you can manage it, 5 or 6 feet is better.

If creating a multi-level pond, be careful not to create static areas where the water does not circulate sufficiently, as this provides places for serious diseases to breed and for debris to collect. This can cause major problems with water quality.

What “Extras” do you want with your Koi Pond?

Would you like “Fries” with that? I mean, would you like Fry in your pond? If you’re thinking about breeding Koi somewhere in the future, you will have to ask about this at the same time you are consulting with the professional pond builder. There are various “extras” that may need to be factored in for the purposes of spawning.

Likewise, if you are looking at the aesthetics of the pond itself, you may want to investigate the cost of adding a “Waterfall” which can greatly aid in the oxygenation of the water and consequently affect the size of any filtration unit required. Pond plants can also add to the expense – be sure you do your research here as you can’t put in any plants you like – that’s an entire other subject.

There are many other materials that need to be factored into the cost of your pond that come under the heading of “necessities” rather than “extras”. These may include but are not limited to such things as a biological filter, pipes, settlement chambers, a de-chlorinator, bird netting, drains, pumps, skimmers, heating, plus more. Again, these should all be discussed with your consultant at the planning stage.

Are you really, really enthusiastic about having your own Koi Pond?

The answer to this one, even after all of the above, should be a resounding “YES”, otherwise, go and buy yourself a goldfish bowl – it will be a lot less expensive with a lot less work, but ultimately, will be a lot less rewarding (no disrespect to goldfish intended!). If the answer is in fact “YES” then great! You have many years ahead to look forward to as your pets grow in size, personality and beauty!

If you are going to house fish chances are you are going to want to make use of a pond heater especially if you experience fluctuations in temperatures. They are usually submersed totally within the pond. There are many makes, models and sizes and vary in price.

Garden Pond Thermometers

Whether you use a pond heater or not you are still going to want to monitor the temperature of the pond water. Even without having fish, many of the garden ponds provide a home to aquatic plants. These plants all have temperature ranges that the water must be kept at in order to keep the plants healthy.

The pond thermometers take the guess work out assuming what the water temperature is. They are one of many garden inexpensive garden pond accessories. They are easy to use, and are immersed below the water level to the about the half way mark of the depth of the water.

Pond Nets

These can be used to control the operation of the pump or the pond lighting or even the waterfall or fountain.

If you are considering joining the thousands of others who are installing ponds in their yards to add a special touch of beauty and ornamentation to their world, there are many things that you need to learn about before you get started. A pond can make a very beautiful addition to any yard no matter how big or small it happens to be.

The right type of pond can turn a plain and boring yard into a tranquil place of exceptional beauty, where you will enjoy spending many hours relaxing. However, you need to realize up front that there is a lot of planning and hard work that goes into creating the perfect pond. This is the same whether you choose to use one of the many prefabricated ponds on the market or use a sheet of EPOM to create a pond of your own design.

While there is a lot of hard work involved in building your pond, you will find once you have placed the last rock in its spot, added your fish and live plants and turned on the waterfall, that all of the work was very worthwhile. One thing that you should keep in mind is that no matter how much work you put into your pond, none of it will matter if you do not use the right pond pump to keep the water moving.

You have to realize that the pond pump you choose is going to be the heart and soul of your pond and if you make the wrong choice, the water in your pond is likely to stagnate and this will kill off not only any fish you put in the pond, but your plants as well. Although you might think that the only thing your pump is supposed to do is make your waterfall or fountain work, this is definitely not the case, in fact many people use a separate pump for this.

Your pond pump has to very important jobs to perform; first it circulates the water in your pond on a continuous basis so that it stays oxygenated well enough to keep your fish and plants alive and well. Secondly the pump will force the water in your pond through your filtration system to remove and debris and contamination from the water before it is returned back to the pond.

You will find that both the fish and any vegetation you plan to keep in your pond need a steady supply of clean and fully reoxygenated water to thrive. If you end up buying a pond pump that does not provide a sufficient flow of water, the water will end up becoming polluted over time and everything you have put in your pond is going to die off as the water becomes too polluted to support life.

Pond pumps are rated by the manufacture for their flow rate in gallons per hour and their lift capability. It is the flow rate that you need to pay the closest attention as it will directly affect how healthy the water will remain in your pond. In order to decide which pump is going to work the best and keep the water in your pond in optimum condition, you need to know approximately how many gallons of water your pond holds.

In order to calculate the capacity of your pond, if you do not already know it, you multiply the length times the width times the depth. Once you have this number, you multiply it by 7.5. This is the number of gallons that fit into a cubic foot. This will give you the total number of gallons of water that your pond holds when it is properly filled. You can use this number to shop for the right pump for your pond. The idea is that you need to be able to fully circulate half the water in your pond through the filter once per hour. So if you have a pond that measures (10 x 4 x 2 feet) x 7.5, you will have 600 gallons of water in it. This means that you need a pump that can move at least 300 gallons of water per hour.

It has been your dream. Now you are ready to start with your first Koi. At this moment this is the time to make a dream a reality and you really want to learn what you have to do to make this dream come true?

There are many questions in your mind. How do I get into Koi Care? What is involved? What is important to realise is that looking after Koi need not be a difficult thing to do if you get a few things right at the very beginning.

But start off on the wrong foot and your Koi adventure could turn your dream into a nightmare. So if this is your starting point this is great because together we can get a few things right even before you start. Let’s look at the broad picture and get down to basics.

Your First Lesson.

Do not go out and buy an aquarium and put a few young Koi in it. You must face facts, Koi fully grown are a big fish and they need a lot of room. If room is a problem you would be better off with Goldfish.

If you do not have room for a pond you will need room for a large tank. The tank’s minimum size would need to be larger than 500 gallons, or 2000 litres. Your circumstances will provide your best answer but a well set up garden pond is most likely your best option to learning Koi care.

Building a Koi Garden Pond.

The key to easy Koi care lies in the design of your pond. Get the design right and keeping Koi can be a delight and a very rewarding hobby. If your pond can be part of a natural stream of running water you have it made. If there is enough running water nature will do its work.

But for most people this will not be possible and the design of your pool will need to achieve what would happen in nature. The size and depth of the pond water needs to be able to cope with both winter and summer temperatures.

Pumps and filters need to be large enough to move a sufficient body of water for filtration and aeration. Aquatic plant life needs to be present to assist filtration and yet protected enough from the Koi who can be very destructive of aquatic plants.

The design of the pond can make or break Koi care. Get the science correct and you are well on your way. Research your design needs and cover every detail in full.

Introducing Your Koi to Your Pond.

With your pond completed it time to introduce your Koi. Don’t be in a hurry. Get your pond running for a period of time.

Give the plants time to become established. Let the good bacteria levels in your filter build to a working level. Learn to check the chemistry levels with a good test set.

Only then should you buy your Koi, and make certain the Koi are from a reputable and trusted supplier.

Koi care starts with the choice of your first purchase. It can be a very discouraging start if you happen to buy Koi that are diseased or carrying a strain of bacteria. If you can arrange for a holding tank for new purchases this can act like a quarantine before placing Koi into your pond along with their diseases.

Don’t overstock. Koi make huge demands on your filters and plant life. Koi grow and their output of waste is significant. Only add new stock when you are absolutely sure your filter and pond system can cope with the additional fish.

You are a beginner in Koi care. Take it easy to start with. Remember your aim is to keep everything in balance.

To start with use your test kit often and learn the trends of your pond chemistry. Keep a written record. Watch your pH, ammonia and nitrite levels closely until you are sure you have established a good balance.

Feeding Your Koi.

Koi are active fish and voracious feeders. Feeding time can be a lot of fun. In a sense you can’t overfeed Koi but do take it easy, remember you are looking for a balance. Beware of rotting food that has been left uneaten. This can destroy your pool balance very quickly. Remember the more you feed Koi the more waste they produce, waste that your system has to remove.

The easy starting point for Koi care in the food line are pellets designed especially for Koi. They float which make it easy to remove uneaten food.

They should contain a balanced diet for Koi but many Koi keepers will use a number of different pellets made by different manufacturers to make certain that Koi are getting all the nutrients they need. Keeping Koi healthy with the right food will keep them active, disease free and brightly coloured.

Koi can be fed some foods like peas, lettuce and worms. Over time you can teach your Koi to feed from your hands and this too can a lot of fun. As your pond becomes come established Koi will nibble on plants, algae, worms and snails found in any pond.

A Watchful Eye.

Unfortunately the old enemy disease can attack your pond. You will often see this first during feeding time. Remove the sick Koi and if possible place the fish in a holding tank. Until you learn about the various diseases seek expert help.

If you have a small holding tank you will be able to medicate your sick Koi. Drugs can be expensive but these costs can be better controlled if you only have to treat a much smaller body of water in a holding tank.

Remember Koi make a good feed for many predators. Birds and cats are probably your worst enemies. Guarding against these threats can go back to your original pond design. If your initial design has taken these issues into account you have already built in your defenses.

Run off from garden fertilizers and chemicals can also play havoc with your pond. Again your initial design should ensure that rainwater which carry these chemicals does not drain into your pond. Ensure that heavy rain does not flood into your pond.

Enjoy your Koi. Learn good Koi care habits. To learn more visit my website www.koihowto.com where I deal with many other aspects of this fascinating hobby.

Frank Rogers started keeping fish in his teens. Since those early days he has kept fish whenever it was possible to do so. While living in the tropics he tried his hand at keeping salt water fish and learnt from his mistakes. He now shares with you the challenge of keeping Koi – perhaps the fish that are the most fun to keep in either a pond or large tank.

Setting up a pond in your garden is no longer a faraway dream but a goal that you can easily meet today. The pond liner which is made from artificial material and is flexible has replaced the concrete pond making the whole project of setting up a pond a lot simpler and cheaper as well.

If you are on a low budget, a small pond which holds at most 1,500 gallons of water should be good enough. You can choose from a preformed pond that is stiff or opt for the flexible kind.

You can easily set up a 10×16 foot pond with a high quality pond liner for less than $1000. You can also choose from many a pond supply available in the market today.

The preformed ponds are available in a variety of shapes and sizes and come at a cost which is a wee fraction of what the concrete ponds would cost you. With the availability of the pond liner and the various kinds of pond supply materials, even the novice gardener can have his own pond setup in a matter of a day and have it stocked with plants, fish and a pond pump, pond filter or pond light the next.

The simplest pond is the preformed pond used above the ground. You may keep a box without a bottom on flat ground putting a cushion material at the bottom. Place the pond liner around the bottom and spread it all along the surface; then fill it with water. If there is excess liner, you can trim it off.

The other kind is the in-ground pond. The majority of people opt for this as the flexible pond liner lets you build a pond of any shape or size. You might use a plastic hose to mark the shape of the pond on the ground and then you can start digging. Next the pond liner may be placed within and then secured with the help of bricks or stones. Make sure that the liner is well protected from sunlight.

Among the pond supply materials, pond filters are an essential item to maintain a clean pond which is free from impurities and safe for your fish. The pond filtration system should work continuously if your fish are to survive. If you have plenty of fish which you would rather not lose, it would be wise to even stock up on a spare filter to make sure that your fish are always assured of a safe and clean environment.

Of all the pond supply equipment, the pond liner has become quite popular, and more and more people have started having their own pond in the garden. The flexible rubber pond liners last as long as their preformed fiberglass pond liners which cost double.

The rubber pond liners might be preferred to the PVC pond liners as they are more long-lasting and flexible; the PVC ones get hard in cold weather as also when exposed to sun.
