A backyard garden pond offers an aesthetic addition to your landscape. Water garden construction projects such as these will offer tranquility and relaxation to the whole family as well. However, building, constructing, and taking care of ponds are not as easy as you may think.

A lot of effort, planning, and money must go into water garden ponds.  It is important that you think things through before deciding on constructing and installing your very own creative water gardens.

A backyard water garden is not as simple as installing it and letting it go afterwards. It is a consistent and constant endeavor, much like a hobby. Maintenance should be done periodically.

There are backyard ponds kits, water garden kits, as well as fish ponds kits available on the market. However, by following some of these guidelines, you will be able to construct and install a do-it- yourself backyard garden pond.

First Tip: Utilize a plastic fish pond liner for your pond

In separating the garden fish pond from the surrounding soil, it is better to use a plastic fish pond liner (PVC liners work best). It prevents the escape of the live aquatic plants, fishes, and other pond contents from the garden fish pond. Along those same lines, it also prevents the entry of nutrients from the soil or other non pond materials. This will make maintenance and cleaning easier since you will only have to deal with the mess and dirt of the backyard pond itself and the fish that live there.

In building the pond of your preferred size, fish pond liners are the option to choose. Usually, they are utilized for large ponds that do not have pre-formed sizes available.

However, it is imperative that you choose the right size of the pond liner. Pond lines or fish pond liners are used for any size of pond. The usual sizes available are 10′ x 15′ to 20′ x 25′ or sometimes larger. This will allow you to build creative water gardens to your preferred size either by using them individually or by connecting together two or more pond liners with an adhesive especially made for this material.

A cement pond liner or molded fish ponds will also do, however, these options are more expensive and may require extra labor in construction.

Second Tip: Avoid low lying areas

Water garden construction in an area of your yard where runoff water from your lawn flows is a huge no-no. The runoff water will only accumulate in your fish pond, causing it to overflow and become dirty as well. This is one of the common mistakes of do-it-yourself backyard water pond projects. Maintaining a fish pond or backyard water garden is difficult enough without excess dirty water coming from your lawn.

On the contrary, installing the pond in an area a little above the ground or in high parts of the lawn will prove to be easier and wiser to maintain.

Third Tip: Provide sufficient sunlight

This means that placing the pond in shady areas will not enhance the growth of the live aquatic plants. On the other hand, placing it in an area where too much sun shines will just cause them to die. Place your pond where there is enough sunlight to filter through. Most live aquatic plants need sunlight to grow, but some do not. Research on what plants suit your weather the best.

Fourth Tip: Water your plants

Adding a variety of live aquatic plants may decrease the excess nutrients in the pond. They will also hamper algae growth that makes the pond murky and dirty.

Consulting your local pond professional is also an option. Not only will they provide advice to make your project work, they may also make maintaining your backyard garden pond easier and more pleasant to do.

As the variety of inexpensive water garden kits increase in the market, water garden features are becoming more popular to the public. Water garden ponds were only a luxury in the past for only those who could afford them. However, with the current landscape water features available today and with the efforts of home owners, building perfect landscaping water features has become a luxury for all.

Unfortunately, the rush of home owners to integrate ponds into their home landscaping, several DIY’ers have made mistakes. Building a backyard garden pond is not as easy as the market has made it out to be. There are several important factors to take into account before and during water garden construction. The environmental surroundings of your backyard will have a great impact on the appearance and maintenance of the pond.

Last of all, size does matter. You need to make sure that the size of the pond will meet your goals. Some homeowners will build a small pond and place a variety of live aquatic plants and animals in it only to find out that the pond cannot satisfy the necessities of the plants and fish. Another thing to consider carefully is the depth of the pond. This is especially true for landscaping water features in colder climates and the ponds that contain fish. If the pond is built too shallow, it could freeze completely. Proper depth should always be considered when talking about size.

Building landscaping water features in your backyard can definitely make it more attractive. It is a great way to make outdoor living more colorful and enjoyable. If built correctly, it can add a certain luster to the beauty of a property and can ultimately raise the market value of the property. 15 Tips For Making A Container Water Garden

Potted plants, they’re common. But when container water gardens are mentioned, chances are, not too many people will be able to answer what it is. Do you know what they are for? No? You’ll know in a minute.

Before, most people who would want to enjoy the beauty of water garden plants would need to set up a pond in their homes. Today, that is just an alternative. Container water gardens are for water plants as pots are for flowering plants.

1. Just like planting the usual garden plants, water plants such as water hyacinth or water lettuce should be packed with clay while submerged in water. 2-3 potted plants together with some plants with broad leaves would be attractive enough.

2. Container water gardens should be kept in places with a high distribution of sunlight (at least 6 hours in a day) and ample supply of water. The containers should be refilled as soon as some of the original content has evaporated. During the afternoon, though, a bit of protection is required for your containers.

3. You must never worry about mosquitoes that might make a lair out of your creation. The water in the container would not become stagnant because of the plants in it. In rare cases where mosquito larvae do develop, take them off immediately and put in fresh water right away.

4. There is no need to go to certain shops just to start your own container water garden. Any type of container that could hold ample amounts of water would do to jumpstart a cute little garden. A small container that can hold a gallon of water (think in terms of old bath tubs!) can hold just one type of water plant. So, you can do the math. The more plants or bigger plants you use, the larger your container should be.

5. To save space, shallow containers could be used for floating plants. If you are opting to add fishes or a water pump to your container, then at least 12 inches is needed to submerge all these.

6. When you are still under the process of selecting the plants for your future water garden, be sure to consider the size of the plants and the available space that you have. For spacious places, bigger plants are required. It would be awful to find a small container in a large space.

8. The great thing about container water gardens, aside from beautifying porches or decks, is that it is emotionally rewarding. This type of garden is easy to maintain since one only needs to trim and fertilize the plants and just replace the water that has evaporated.

9. Remember this, and remember it well! Be sure to take your containers inside your home when the winter season begins. You wouldn’t want your water plants to freeze, would you?

10. Be sure of where you want the container to be permanently placed. Remember, water is quite heavy and once it is inside the containers together with your water plants, having to move them from one place to another could be taxing.

11. If you are bent on having a pond anytime soon, then container water gardening is a small-scale counterpart of your future pond. You could start practicing in keeping a larger garden by keeping the smaller one first.

12. Other possible containers that can be used which are easily produced are whiskey barrels, kiddie pools or even horse watering troughs. Just a little imagination and these old items can be turned into something elegant.

13. Place bricks underneath your plants to adjust their height.

14. It is highly advised to use black or any dark colored containers as they discourage the growth of algae and they give the impression of depth.

15. Around 50-60 percent of the water surface should be covered with your chosen water plants. And make sure to let the water stand for about 1-2 days before putting the plants so that any trace of chlorine has already settled by then.

These are just a handful of tips in starting a container water garden. With less effort but boundless rewards, this is the perfect new endeavor for anyone.

If there was one thing that could enhance the look of a property’s exterior, it would be the presence of a water garden. Water gardens can be designed in a multitude of fashions. In many cases, the craftsmanship of a water garden can reach virtuoso levels. However, designing and building a water garden is not enough. A water garden must be properly maintained. For some, this may seem like a ponderous (pardon the pun) task. But it really isn’t. While water garden maintenance does require effort, it is not overly complicated.

So, let’s look at a few common steps for proper water garden maintenance.

Reducing the presence of algae is critical. As far as ecosystems go, algae are quite helpful. However, algae can seriously detract from the look of a water garden when they become overpopulated. So, reducing the presence of algae is of paramount importance. One way to go about this involves using algaecides. Unfortunately, some algaecides can be dangerous to fish and only offer a short term solution. This is why it may be best to utilize ultraviolet sterilizers ( for green water algae) and/or proper filtration to help remove the nutrients that algae feed on and create a balanced ecosystem that is not conducive to their growth.

Be prudent when populating a water garden with aquatic life. If the water garden is overloaded with fish and other wildlife, the look of the water garden can be hampered. Also, the higher the volume of aquatic life in the water garden, the more algae will grow due to organic waste created by them. So, maintaining prudent levels of fish and other animals will have the ancillary effect of reducing algae and keeping the water clear and healthy.

Maintaining proper water levels is also paramount. Proper water levels are needed in order for the water garden’s pump(s) to work properly. If there is not enough water in the pond, the pump cannot properly oxygenate the water garden. This is a critical point because low oxygen levels will cause fatalities in the fish.

Removing any obstructions to sunshine will maintain the health of the water garden’s plants. If the plants die from lack of sunshine, the water garden becomes little more than a tub of water. This is why it is of significant importance that plants receive adequate sunshine. To maintain plant life, four to six hours of sunshine is needed for most plants. Any obstructions in the way of the sun’s rays must be removed. This includes trimming tree branches, bushes, etc. Again, this is where filtration and nutrient control becomes important, because while the “good” plants need light to grow, so does algae. However a healthy population of “good” plants with good filtration will help with <A rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.naturalenviro.com/sections.php?section=AlgaeControl”>algae control</A>, even in direct sunlight.

Make sure filters are maintained properly and replaced when necessary. Dirty water does not do a water garden good. That is why installing a proper filter is a must. Of course, one needs to keep a watchful eye on the filter(s) to make sure it/they operate properly. Helpful Tips for Designing Your Own Water Garden

As a homeowner, you should take pride in beautifying your home, both inside and out. One way to add beauty and serenity to your landscape is by installing a water garden. You can choose to have a water garden that only has aquatic plants, one that has fish, or a koi pond. No matter what type of water garden you choose, it will bring you many compliments and much joy.

If you decide that you want to decorate your water garden with aquatic plants, lilies are among the most common. There are two main types of lilies that do well in water gardens, hardy lilies, and tropical lilies. Hardy lilies come in all different colors and sizes. Hardy lilies usually start to bloom sometime in the month of May, and continue to grace your water garden with beautiful color and fragrance until about the end of September. Before purchasing your hardy lilies, it may be a good idea to check with your local garden supply to make certain that your climate can accommodate them nicely.

Like hardy lilies, tropical lilies also come in an array of color and sizes. Tropical lilies only thrive in areas where the average temperature is around seventy degrees, so keep this in consideration when choosing them for your water garden. Some tropical lilies, unlike most flowers, bloom at night instead of early morning, giving them an added interest factor.

Floating plants also make for an appealing water garden. Floating plants seemingly sit on top of the water, their roots hidden well below the water’s surface. Due to the extra shade that floating plants provide, they help to greatly reduce algae in your garden pond in the summer. As with all aquatic plants, take your climate into careful consideration before purchasing.

When it comes to adding fish to your water garden, goldfish seem to be the fish of choice. They come in a wide variety of colors and types. Goldfish are also the most economical fish to add to your water garden, as they are fairly inexpensive, and live for a long time, even in colder climates. You need to decide when planning your water garden whether or not you want to include fish, as they require much deeper water to survive than do aquatic plants. It is also important to consider your climate and normal temperature ranges, so that you can purchase the right fish for your garden pond. Fish sometimes can be very fragile, and don’t adapt well to sudden drops or increases in temperature or changes in their environment.

For any fish to survive in your water pond, you will need to ensure the water remains at the correct ph level, and that there is no contamination from yard debris, or runoff.

When adding your goldfish to your water garden, let them float in the bag you purchased them in on the ponds surface so that they can adjust to the water temperature. This process usually takes about half an hour. After they have had time to adjust to their surroundings, then carefully release the goldfish into the water garden.

If you have aquatic plants in your water garden along with your goldfish, then there is probably no need to give them additional food. They will live off of the plants, algae, and insects that also inhabit the water garden.

Koi ponds are also popular, but keep in mind, that koi are known to eat many types of aquatic plants, so if put koi in your water garden, you may not have anything else. You need to have a larger space to accommodate koi, because they are quite large. Koi tend to make good pets, as you can actually train them to eat straight from your hand, much as you might with a new puppy. Koi bring a taste of the exotic to any water garden. Unlike goldfish, you do need to feed your koi, as they cannot live solely from the environment. You can purchase automated feeders to install in your water garden, which will take care of your koi for you. Koi are not as fairly priced as goldfish, and can become quite expensive, depending on the particular variety you select.

Regardless of what you decide to put in your water garden, whether it is plant life, goldfish, or koi, it will definitely be a source of enjoyment for you and your family for many years to come. Not to mention that the addition of a water garden to your property greatly increases the value of your home.

Highly chlorinated water kills the microorganisms that are found it in the soil. The unfortunate part about the previous statement is that those microorganisms are there for a reason. It is their task to protect the plant and the source where it gets its food.

This is the very reason why home gardeners steer clear of chlorinated water. They prefer a healthier choice – cleaner water. By getting a filter system for their garden water, 85% of the chlorine from hose water is removed.

The water from garden filter systems are also beneficial for bathing dogs. Children can also have fun with the sprinkler. In fact, it can also be used to wash cars.

Chlorine kills living organisms like bacteria and fungi but at the same time, it also contaminates the water source. Chlorine is harmful to your plants primarily because they depend on these organisms to stay alive.

Plants survive because they receive the nutrients they need from the soil and water. A healthy soil is composed of molds, fungi and bacteria (which chlorine is designated to kill.)
